This annual event is hosted on behalf of the co-Chairs of the Parliamentary Friends of Soil by event partners Soil Science Australia, Soil CRC, Soils For Life and other event supporters .

The networking breakfast, celebrating United Nations' World Soil Day, is an opportunity for the members of the Parliamentary Friends of Soil, and other parliamentarians, to connect with specialists, stakeholders and decision-makers dealing with soil issues and policies.

This year, the theme for World Soil Day is Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities and there will be a special guest speaker presenting on this topic. The event will see the launch of the Parliamentary Friends of Soil under the 48th Parliament. The friendship group was initially established in 2020 under the 46th Parliament. Formal proceedings will be kept short, followed by networking and refreshments.

The event is strictly invitation only.

Invitees include:

  • Members of the Parliamentary Friends of Soil
  • other Senators and Members of Parliament, including those who hold positions in portfolios of relevance to soil, in both the Ministry and Shadow Ministry
  • Secretaries and Deputy Secretaries of key Commonwealth departments and agencies (and a select number of other key stakeholders within these)
  • CEOs or other high-level attendees from relevant industry bodies, Research and Development Corporations, and other key stakeholders
  • A small number of representatives from partner and supporter organisations.

History of the event

The inaugural event was held at Old Parliament House in Canberra 2020, where the Parliamentary Friends of Soil was launched under the 46th Parliament.

This initial event was hosted and organised by the Soil CRC in partnership with SSA, Soils For Life and the Office of the National Soils Advocate.

The event has successfully continued over subsequent years with organisation of the event rotating between the partners. Following the wind-up of the Office of the National Soils Advocate, SSA took the lead for the event in 2023 and 2024, and SSA is organising again for 2025.

Opportunities to support and receive invitations to the 2025 event

Event supporters from previous years included a limited number of educational institutions, government departments and agencies, industry bodies, not-for-profit organisations and private companies. This support helps ensure the success of the event.

This year, due to interest we received from people wanting to be involved, we opened the opportunity to a broader stakeholder base, including SSA members. Out of courtesy, we ensured those organisations that supported this event in previous years were given first opportunity to support again in 2025.

The opportunity to support opened in the week commencing 20 October 2025, and was limited to 20 organisations, with supporters confirmed on a first-in, first-served basis.

The opportunity to support this event is now closed as 20 organisations have taken up the offer (as at 5 November 2025).

Thanks to the following organisations that have registered to support the event:

Croplife; Mulloon Institute; BeneTerra; YLAD Living Soils; Waratah Consulting; Climate Friendly; Innovative Agronomy Services; Wilchem; CSIRO; Down Under Covers Enterprises; Verterra; Fertilizer Australia; NSW Soil Knowledge Network; University of Sydney Institute of Agriculture; Soil Carbon Industry Group; Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry; Aroura – Soil Security Thinktank; Griffith University; RegenWA; and Australia New Zealand Biochar Industry Group.

We are also grateful to the Australasian Land and Groundwater Association for supporting the feature presenter for this year's event, A/Prof Suzie Reichman.
